This was an assignment for a class called Visual Communications. This class explored Gestalt's theories of design and how designers can implement these theories into their designs. Our assignment was to research a city and create a flag design for the community utilizing the five rules of excellent flag design.

This was my final design for Elkhart, KS, my hometown. The rectangle design represents the state of Kansas, and the diagonal line draws attention to the bottom left corner of the rectangle, where Elkhart is located on a state map. This diagonal also represents the highway that draws tourists into Elkhart. The horizontal lines lying vertically on the flag represent the railroad's formation and its influence on the development of Elkhart. The color orange was a nod to the local school system in Elkhart, with the red and blue acknowledging the health department in the city and the employment opportunities and health services it provides to its residents.
This is some of the research that I completed for this project. I knew I wanted to showcase the location of Elkhart since it is a tiny, unknown town, so this drove a large part of my design process. I considered including some of the things Elkhart is known for and some of its other history, but I focused more on the directional flow the location promoted.
